Favorite Witches on Film, 2023

There weren’t a lot of witches in film this year, though there were some witchy characters and situations and definitely some occult activity. Before the year ends I’ll be doing my usual survey of the year’s pagan, witchy, and occult movies and TV.

But my very favorite witches this year were the young triplets in Wes Anderson’s wonderful film, Asteroid City. These three sassy gals (Ella, Gracie, and Willan Faris) were just about my favorite thing about this film, which is saying a lot because the film is full of all kinds of beautiful, odd people and weird happenings. They claim to be “part witches, part alien” which, if you’ve seen the film, makes a strange kind of sense.

The film is streaming now on Prime video, and available to rent and on demand also. Like all of Wes Anderson’s work, this film is complex, funny, visually gorgeous, and full of wonderful actors. Let me know what you think! I plan to watch it again soon, as it’s so full of fascinating details.
